What is EMG?

Electromyography (EMG) is the electrical examination of the functions of muscles and nerves within the body. Thanks to the electrical current applied during the EMG, the electrical conduction functions of the nerves and the potential of the muscles created by this discharge can be measured.

In which situations should EMG be performed?

  • Nerve injuries, (stabbing, gunshot injuries, etc.)
  • Metabolic complaints such as diabetes, folic acid, vitamin B12 deficiency,
  • Poliomyelitis,
  • ALS,
  • Nervous diseases, carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel syndromes
  • Herniated disc and cervical hernia,
  • Facial paralysis,
  • Nerve injuries that may occur in babies during birth,
  • Diagnosis of muscle diseases,

What to pay attention before coming to EMG procedure?

  • Satiety is required for needle EMG.
  • It is recommended that you prefer comfortable clothes to allow you to move your arms and legs easily and you can take off easily.

What is EEG?

EEG (electroencephalography) is the process of evaluating the electrical activity of the brain. Electrical signals related to nerve cells (neurons) in the brain tissue are transmitted to the scalp on the skull. EEG is used to diagnose and follow certain conditions or diseases that affect the brain.

How is EEG performed?

For an EEG procedure, the electrodes are attached to the scalp and sometimes both earlobes with a special adhesive called paste. Brain waves measured by electrodes are transferred to the monitor via cables, and in this way, the brain waves are displayed.

The electrodes do not deliver electricity to the brain, they only record the electrical activity in the brain. Therefore, EEG is not a painful procedure. It can be performed during sleep or while awake depending on the request of the physician. The electrical activity of the brain changes during sleep and wakefulness. Depending on the disease suspected by the physician, the patient may be asked to be sleeping or awake during EEG recording.

What to pay attention before coming to EEG procedure?

Patients should come with clean hair for EEG procedure. Dirty hair can prevent the signal records from the scalp and prevent accurate results. No substance (cream, oil, gel) should be applied to the hair.

In which situations should EEG be performed?

  • Epilepsy
  • Brain trauma due to head injuries
  • Diseases that can lead to brain dysfunction, such as encephalopathy
  • Brain tumors
  • Inflammation of the brain (Encephalitis)
  • Stroke (Paralysis)
  • Sleep disorders
  • Psychiatric diseases
  • Neuropsychiatric disorders
  • Memory problems
  • Dementia
