What is Sleep Test (Polysomnography)?

Polysomnography (sleep test) is a test for diagnosing sleep disorders. It is also called sleep disorder test and often used to investigate the presence of respiratory disorders observed with respiratory arrest and snoring during sleep. In addition, it is also used in the detection of rarer conditions such as sleep movement disorders, sleep terror, sleep paralysis, narcolepsy, parasomnia. If your doctor suspects that you have sleep apnea syndrome, a polysomnography test is required.

How is the Sleep Test Done?

Polysomnography (sleep disorder test) is a test that measures your breathing, brain waves, heart rate, body movements, snoring, and oxygen levels in your blood during the night. For this reason, electrodes must be placed on some parts of your body. Small sensors are placed on your head, mouth and nose, chest, neck, fingertips, and legs. This is a painless procedure. After the sensors are placed, you will be expected to lie in your bed and sleep according to your normal sleeping time.

This disease is an extremely serious but underestimated, life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention. When to Make a Sleep Test?

  • If you have sweating on your neck and nape at night and you wake up frequently and go to the toilet,

  • If you get enough sleep at night, you wake up rested in the morning, but you have sleep attacks that you cannot prevent during the day and you are dreaming at that time, you may need to have a sleep test.

How Long Does the Sleep Test Take?

The polysomnography test does not take as short as other tests. This test, which is usually performed at night, continues until the person wakes up.

Is it necessary to prepare before the sleep test?

Before taking the test, you should inform your doctor about the drugs you use. It is recommended to take a shower before the test so that the electrodes can be placed stronger. Drinks such as tea and coffee should not be consumed as they may prevent you from falling asleep.

Is Anesthesia Used in Sleep Testing?

No anesthetic drug is used to facilitate sleep in polysomnography, the patient is expected to fall asleep by himself/herself.
