What is Obesity?

Obesity is the name given to excess fat accumulation in the body. Excessive accumulation of fat in the body causes health problems, dysfunctional problems and various disorders. Increasing adipose tissue in the body affects the hormonal system of the body and causes an increase in weight gain.

What are the Causes of Obesity?

One of the most important causes of obesity is malnutrition. Consuming fatty and high-calorie foods, eating irregularly and consuming unhealthy foods are the main causes of obesity. It is commonly seen in inactive people who have an unbalanced diet and do not do sports.

Another cause of obesity is genetic predisposition. Their bodies tend to gain weight quickly. Obesity is 80% more likely to occur in children whose parents are obese or overweight.

Some diseases can also lead to obesity in patients. Diabetes, thyroid gland disorders, adrenal gland disorders and hormonal disorders are the main diseases causing obesity. People who have one or more of these diseases are recommended to follow diet programs prepared by dietitians in order to eliminate the obesity risk.

Obesity Treatment

In the obesity treatment, it is aimed to make the patient lose weight. The aim is to reduce the body mass index to the range of 20 to 25. The healthy weight of the patients will be determined by the calculation of the body mass index. In addition to weight loss, it is aimed to maintain the existing weight and prevent weight gain. For this purpose, diets should be applied first. Diet lists prepared by specialist dietitians with different methods and techniques for each patient should be applied regularly. It is aimed for patients to lose a healthy weight by reducing calorie intake and increasing the nutritional value. Exercise therapy is also recommended for these patients. Moderate exercise of at least 30 minutes a day is recommended. In this way, the fat burning of the patients is accelerated and it is aimed to strengthen the damaged and weakened muscle tissues.

The most definitive and last method for obesity is surgical treatment. There are many surgical methods that can prevent obesity. These treatment methods, which have a very high success rate, can be applied to any patient who is suitable for the body.

Obesity Surgery

Obesity surgery is the name given to the medical interventions applied to ensure weight loss of patients.  If the patient's body mass index is 35 and above, surgical treatment is recommended for these patients.

Surgical treatment methods provide the most definitive results in the treatment of obesity today. However, the patient’s attitude is of great importance in surgical treatment. After the surgical intervention, a regular diet should be started and maintained. In obesity surgery, closed (laparoscopic) interventions are performed. There are two types of these surgical procedures. In some patients, procedures are applied for gastric volume reduction. These procedures are based on removing body fats. Another option is the interventions disrupting the absorption system. In this type of surgical operations, it is aimed to reduce the nutrient absorption in the body and thus to prevent weight gain.

Metabolic Surgery

Metabolic surgery, also known as diabetes surgery, is performed for the treatment of metabolic diseases. In addition, metabolic surgery is used for the treatment of obesity, high cholesterol and hypertension problems.

Metabolic syndrome is an extremely serious condition that can lead to organ damage and cardiovascular diseases, leading to death, as well as interfering with the daily life of the person if not treated. In these cases, metabolic surgery methods should be considered first.

Diabetes surgery is performed to eliminate insulin resistance in the body. After diabetes surgery, the existing insulin in the body can be used without any problems, thus preventing the increasing blood sugar. Diabetes surgery is only applied to patients with Type 2 diabetes.

Methods Used in Our Bariatric Surgery Center

Sleeve Gastrectomy

Gastric sleeve surgery is one of the most preferred surgical treatment methods for obesity problems today.  In this surgery, a large portion of the stomach is removed and its volume is reduced. Thus, the nutrition of the person is limited, and since the portion of the stomach secreting the hunger hormone is removed, the patient's appetite decreases after the surgery. Gastric sleeve surgery is performed with the laparoscopic (closed) method. The surgery is performed by entering the abdominal cavity through small incisions.

Problems such as infection, blood clotting, embolism, and leakage from sleeve gastrectomy are among the risks of gastric sleeve surgery. These risks are more common in people who are elderly, have blood clotting problems, or are extremely obese. If the recommendations of the dietitian and doctor are followed after the surgery, these problems are less common.

Gastric Bypass

By the gastric bypass surgery, the stomach and a portion of the small intestine are bypassed, and it is aimed that the food taken will reach the last portions of the stomach directly without traveling around all or a large portion of the stomach, the duodenum and the first portions of the small intestine. This surgery is performed with the laparoscopic method, as in other bariatric surgery, by entering through small incisions in the abdomen.

After gastric bypass, patients easily feel satiety even when they eat a small amount of food. Since the foods do not pass through the duodenum, most of them are thrown out without being absorbed. This ensures that even when the person eats high-calorie food, it is thrown out without being stored as fat and they lose weight.

Dumping syndrome (the situation in which the foods and liquids taken after gastric bypass pass into the intestine very quickly) is one of the side effects of this surgery. In addition, life-long vitamin supplements should be taken in order to avoid post-operative vitamin and mineral loss.

Gastric Balloon

In the gastric balloon method, a balloon is placed in the stomach with an endoscopy device. The balloon is then inflated to create a feeling of satiety. Gastric balloon is a non-surgical obesity treatment method. However, since the balloon is removed after 6 months, if the patient does not change his lifestyle and does not continue his diet, the result may not be permanent; those who lose weight with a gastric balloon can gain weight again if they do not pay attention to their diet.

Recently, in addition to the classical gastric balloon, the swallowable gastric balloon procedure is also widely used. The advantage of the swallowable gastric balloon; it does not require anesthesia and endoscopy; it is eliminated from the body spontaneously and the complication rate is very low.

Gastric Botox

Gastric botox is also a weight loss method that does not require surgery, like the gastric balloon. Well, how is gastric botox done? By entering through the stomach with the endoscopic method, Botox is injected into the necessary points.  This process allows the stomach to empty for a long time; thus, the person does not get hungry easily and helps to lose weight as appetite control is provided.

The recovery period in stomach botox is much shorter than in other procedures. For this reason, patients can return to their daily lives immediately after the procedure.
